The Reality of Being a Musician

MUSIC / THE ARTS

Music is a huge part of my life.

I play violin and piano, I listen to music, I read music, I sing music… well, you get the point. I guess you can say I’m a very musical person! There are a lot of realities people don’t know that take part in being a musician (and a very devoted one, too!) It’s not as easy and it looks or sounds. I’m excited for you guys to read this post, so let’s jump right in!

__________

“KNOW IT ALL”

Somehow, people expect you to know everything there is to know about music. Seriously, this is no joke. Just because I play an instrument doesn’t mean I suddenly become some musical dictionary! Okay, it may not be that bad, but it can get a little frustrating at times. As musicians, though, we should know a little bit about what we do, right? It’s totally cool if you’re a music theory geek or a composer junkie. In fact, it can be something really unique about you! It’s not something an average person knows!

WITH THE BEAT

Does anyone relate to this? Please tell me you do! When you’re singing a song in your head and there is some sort of beat (whether it be a vehicle’s turning signal, a dishwasher, or any repetitive sound) you will sync the song to the beat, no matter how fast or slow it is! It’s almost (sinful) if you don’t sing to the beat! Well, maybe not sinful… but you hear me on this.

THE PAIN

Most people don’t know this, but you get really sore (especially if you’re a string player)! This one may seem unusual, but it’s really actually true. It could be your back, your neck, your wrists, your fingers! If you’re a stringed instrument player like me, your fingers get callused constantly. If you play piano, it might be your finger muscles that get cramped. No matter the pain, its relate to able being a musician.

As the wonderful Michele reminded me, pain should not be a constant thing. If you are continuos suffering from pain during playing an instrument, you should adjust something your’e doing and figure out what’s causing the pain!

CONSTANT SOUNDS

You constantly have a song in your head! It may also be a rhythm or a certain measure that you had to repeat over and over again that day during practice. Repetition is a huge part of being a musician, and that repetition have an impact on your memory – and that’s a good thing – until you get it stuck in your head… #brainhurts

LAST FIRST RESORT

Music can either be the last or first resort, depending on your mood. It has proved to have a huge impact on your mood and circumstance. For example, people tend to listen to sad, depressing music when they’ve suffered some sort of heartache (loss, heartbreak, etc. 🤣) on the other hand, people in happier moods lean to uplifting, upbeat music when they find themselves in a positive situation via. This is relatable to me. I find myself at the piano of pulling out my violin when I have nothing else to do or need something to keep my mind off a certain thing.

__________

Now don’t get me wrong – being a musician isn’t all that bad. I love it, and even though practicing and playing an instrument may be hard sometimes, it’s always worth it in the long run. Having the opportunity to be able to learn an instrument is a great privilege, so please don’t take it for granite! If you ever have the chance to take lessons and learn an instrument, take it. You never know how fun it is until you try!

Do you play an instrument? Can you relate to any of these?

  1. I play piano, violin, and banjo. This post is so true! If you can play an instrument, especially piano, people ask you to play different songs. And it is annoying when you are in bed and you make up a song to the clock. It’s pretty sad. Great post!

  2. Haha! As a pianist I relate to so much of this! Another “reality” is the fact that you need to practice super regularly – most regularly than almost any other hobby you might have. For me that often means I schedule my day around my practicing – making sure I have time for it, etc. (Just as a PS, however, pain usually shouldn’t be something you experience – it might be due to poor posture or faulty technique and may be a sign of something that needs to be changed.)

    1. Yeah, that’s true! Pain shouldn’t be a regular thing, just something you experience sometimes – such as practicing for a long time! Thanks for commenting, Michele! ❤

  3. I play clarinet and saxophone, which is waaaay different than violin, but I still related with all of these! Especially the one about always having a song in your head. We’re practicing Christmas music now in my band, so I’ve got Christmas music continually playing in my brain. XD

  4. Wow, you sound very talented! I have wanted to learn to play an instrument most of my life, but I dance which takes up a lot of time, so I can’t do both. If I did have the opportunity to learn, I’d love to play the piano.
