We’re in a Battle, but He’s Already Won

As Christians, we are fighting a battle. Right here, right now.

With constant peer pressure from friends, culture, movies, magazines, and books (just to name a few), being a follower of Christ can be a challenge. Daily, Christians are battling a war against Satan – with stealing, lying, disobeying – parents, teachers, idols – social media, tv shows, boys, fashion, food, and so much more. These things are pulling us away from the one who made us – and we need to fight back.

As Paul writes in a letter to the church in Ephesus:

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

And we need to be on guard. We need to be ready. This isn’t a battle against flesh and blood. It’s a spiritual battle, and it’s going on in your heart, right now.

We need to be ready to fight. We need to take up the full armour (Ephesians 6:10-20) of God so that we might withstand the schemes of the devil – the temptations, the trials.

Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:14-17

The first piece of armour that we need to apply is the belt of truth. The Bible says that truth “will set us free”. What is the best way to tell the good from the wrong? Study the good. Know the truth. If you know what is good, you will be able to determine the wrong.

Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Psalm 25:5

The second piece of armour is the breastplate of righteousness. Righteousness is living according to God’s word and law – striving to keep his commandments and obeying him.

Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 1 John 3:7

The third is the gospel of peace. Be ready to defend what you believe. is As Peter writes:

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear. 1 Peter 3:15

If someone were to walk up to you and ask you what it was that you believed, what would you say?

The fourth piece of armour we need to gird ourselves with is the shield of faith. We need to have faith that God will overcome. With God, all things are possible. And in having faith in him, we will also be able to overcome the world.

Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. 1 John 5:5

The fifth piece of armour it the helmet of salvation. The salvation of the Lord is a daily an ongoing deliverance from sin. If we believe that Jesus is Lord and that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. You can be assured that you are his.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Romans 10:9-10

The final piece of armour is the sword of the Spirit – God’s word. With it, we can win any war that is waged against us – but only through Jesus Christ. You need to daily be in the word – reading it, memorizing it, meditating on it.

How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. Psalm 119:9

If we live according to the word of God, we will be able to fight this Battle.

We are constantly bombarded with wicked thoughts, (and actions) both outwardly and inwardly.

But don’t lose heart: He has already won the battle.

For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory. Deuteronomy 20:4

We have victory in Christ Jesus – he has conquered every evil thought, every evil deed, crowning his blood-stained brow on the Cross. He was crucified for our transgressions, he bore the wrath of God so that we could have eternal life.

We are not alone in this battle.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

Friends – we are in a war. But we have already won. Christ has conquered sin. He’s conquered death. And it’s all because of his unending love for us. He has loved us in the beginning, he loves us now, and he will love us for all of eternity. Remember, God will fight for you. All you need to do is be still. What an encouragement it is, dear friends!

Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
